Honda's new "Civic Si", 200 horsepower turbo and "Type R" technology

Honda's US division announced the new "Civic Si" (Honda Civic Si) on October 19.

Civic Si is a high-performance grade prepared for "Civic" for the United States. It will be a grade that fills the gap between the ultimate high-performance model "Type R" and the standard model. The new Civic also has a lineup of "Si".

◆ More responsive 1.5-liter "VTEC turbo" engine

The new Civic Si will be equipped with a 1.5-liter in-line 4-cylinder gasoline "VTEC turbo" engine. The maximum output is 200hp / 6000rpm, and the maximum torque is 26.5kgm / 1800-5000rpm. The maximum output is 20hp and the maximum torque is 2kgm higher than the base engine.

This engine has a wider power curve than the conventional one. The maximum torque generation speed is 300 rpm lower than before, and it is said that the rise from tight corners is faster. The engine is also tuned to maintain more power between 6000 rpm, which produces maximum power, and 6500 rpm, which is the red line.

The new Civic Si is equipped with a newly developed dual coil silencer exhaust system that increases the exhaust flow by 27% compared to the "Touring" grade. In addition, in order to realize the natural exhaust sound of the engine in the cabin, we will introduce the latest active sound control system that produces high quality sound in a wider engine speed range.

◆ Equipped with Type R rev matching system

The newly designed single mass flywheel is 26% lighter than the dual mass unit used in the conventional model. By reducing the inertia of the flywheel by 30%, the 1.5-liter turbo engine is proud to offer a sportier driving experience while improving drivability. Power is sent to the front wheels via the helical LSD to maximize traction during acceleration.

The 6-speed MT of the new Civic Si has an improved shift feel. It is said that the highly rigid shift lever mounting bracket similar to the "Civic Type R" and the newly developed aluminum shift knob contribute to improving the feeling.

In addition, the new Civic Si will be equipped with a Civic Type R rev matching system. With the same response time of 430 milliseconds as in the Civic Type R sports mode, downshift is detected and blipping is performed to match the engine speed.

◆ Front and rear bushes have the same specifications as Type R

Regarding body rigidity, we aimed for the Civic Si, which has the highest rigidity in history. Compared to the conventional type, the torsional rigidity is increased by 8% and the bending rigidity is increased by 13%. To maximize handling and driver enjoyment, the spring rate has been increased by 8% at the front and 54% at the rear compared to the new Civic Sedan.

The damper is also specially tuned. The front MacPherson struts feature a reinforced upper mount and a large diameter stabilizer with 27mm hollow front and 18mm rear solids to minimize body roll.

To improve stability, the front compliance bush has the same specifications as the Civic Type R. As a result, it is 79% more rigid than the "EX" grade of the new Civic sedan. The more rigid rear compliance bush, upper arm, and lower B arm have the same specifications as the Civic Type R. The steering feel is also improved by using a torsion bar with high rigidity of 60%.

The new Civic Si is equipped with a larger capacity brake than the new Civic sedan. The rotor diameter is 312mm at the front and 282mm at the rear. 235 / 40R18 size all-season performance tires are standard equipment.

◆ Exclusively designed exterior

The exterior of the new Civic Si is equipped with a more aggressive front bumper. The rear bumper incorporates two large oval exhaust chips.

The front spoiler and the rear spoiler with a gloss black finish on the boot lid increase downforce and improve high-speed stability. The door mirrors and window surround are equipped with gloss black trim. LED headlights and taillights are standard equipment.

The standard 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels have a special matte black finish. The body color can be selected from the exclusive Blazing Orange Pearl.

◆ Driver-focused interior

The interior of the new Civic Si emphasizes the driver. The dedicated body stabilizer sports seat is designed with an integrated headrest. Supportability is also pursued.

Red contrast stitching is applied to the doors, steering wheel, center armrest, shift boots, shift knobs and sports pedals. A special red trim was attached to the metal honeycomb dash panel.

The new 7-inch color meter display has a digital tachometer on the left, a multi-information display in the center, and a speedometer on the right. It comes standard with a 9-inch HD color touch screen, wireless Apple "CarPlay", Google "Android Auto", and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.
